1800 Census

East New Market

The guidelines for the 1800 enumeration were the same as 1790, except that the work was to be carried on under the direction of the Secretary of State.  The census began on the first Monday in August and was concluded within nine months.

In 1800, the following persons owned land in New Market:  James Sulivane (p687x2),  Theophilus Marshall (p682?), Thomas Jackson (p652), John Mackey (p652), Cyrus Mitchell (deceased), Charles Lecompte (p682, p684), Jonathan Bunnell (?), John Stevens (p656, p681), Henry Haskins (p652), Grantham Earle (p652), Edwards Thompson (p646), James B. Sulivane (p651), John Eccleston (p745), Daniel Sulivane (?), Thomas Stevens (p653, p654, p689), Levin Marshall (?), John Anderton Mitchell (p715), and Thomas Troth (p683).

Some East New Market land owners also owned land in other parts of the county and state.  Since the people above listed on pages 651 and 652 were known to have had houses in East New Market and did not own much if any land in any other parts of the county, it is believed that people in the area that comprises New Market are listed on pages 651 and 652 (below).

Schedule of the whole number of persons within the division allotted to John Green

Special thanks to Glenda Thompson and Norman Corkran who transcribed the entire 1800 Census for Dorchester County and submitted it to the U.S. GenWeb Census Project.  I independently transcribed pages 651 and 652 from the 1800 Census for Dorchester County and afterwards compared my transcription to theirs.  The clean and legible handwriting of the census-taker, John Green, resulted in almost all of our entries being identical.  The two differing entries are noted in red (parenthesis).  African Americans are noted in blue
