The enumeration for fourth census began on the first Monday in August. The composition of each household was to be enumerated, as it existed on this day. Noted that the number of free white males between the ages of 16 and 18 are repeated in the column for free white males ages 16 to 26. The 1820 Census act required that enumeration should be by an actual inquiry at every dwelling house, or of the head of every family within each district.
The First Election District was completed by Thomas Light, Deputy Marshall. John Sterling and Andrew S. Gootee certified that a correct copy of the schedule was set up and remained at two of the most public places within the division, open to the inspection of all concerned.

The 1820 census also collected the number of foreigners not naturalized and the number of persons (including slaves) engaged in agriculture, commerce, and manufactures. In East New Market only one household included a "foreigner not naturalized". This was the household of St. George E. Roberts. The data recorded for persons engaged in agriculture, commerce, and manufactures, is questionable for East New Market. Every household had an entry of 1 in the agriculture column. This may denote that the household was engaged in agriculture rather than a count of farmers. None of the households had an entry in the manufactures column. Nine households had an entry of 1 in the commerce column. The heads were John Moore, Thomas Troth, Stephen Simpson, Nancy McCollister, Robert L. Green, Nancy Thompson, William Vinson, Abraham Lynch and Ann E. Sulivane.

I independently transcribed pages 335 through 338 from the 1820 Census for Dorchester County and afterwards compared my transcription to Mr. Corkran's. The differing entries are noted in red (parenthesis). African Americans are noted in blue. My original 1820 Census transcription looks nice, but may take longer to load if you do not have a broadband or T1 connection.
