Dorchester County Commercial Directory
Cambridge 1908-1909
“Cambridge is a beautiful town of 7500 population…the county seat of
Dorchester. Delightfully situated on Cambridge Creek and Choptank River,
of which the latter at this point is two miles wide, abounding in fish, crabs,
terrapin, and oysters. Its inner harbor is said to be the best in the country.
Cambridge is the terminus of the Cambridge and Seaford Railroad, a branch of
the great Pennsylvania System, which connects it with all the large cities of
the country. Five first class steamers are daily plying between here and
Baltimore. Three new hotels. One hotel now open for summer boarders, situated
on river front two miles wide, nice bathing and a good beach. Many fraternal
and beneficial orders, as follows: Masons, Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias,
Jr Mechanics, United Workmen, Red Men, etc. We have many up-to-date
improvements and business enterprises, principally among which may be named
the Cambridge Manufacturing Co., operating large Flouring Mills, Lumber Mills,
Basket Mills, Tin Can factory and Marine Railway. We have three large shirt
factories, the Cambridge Water Co., which supplies the City with the finest
artesian water and pure crystal ice; the Cambridge Gas Co., the Cambridge
Fire Department which is the best volunteer company in the State, and numerous
large and extensive fruit and oyster packing establishments. There are many
other thriving enterprises, whose proprietors are wide-awake and up-to-date
business people. There are published 3 weeklies, 1 tri-weekly and one daily
newspaper. There are also two Job Printing Plants.
Cambridge may be justly styled the city of churches, there being eight religious
denominations with ten places of worship. Christ P E Church was first built in
1692, was rebuilt in 1794; was destroyed by fire in 1882, and on the site of the
ancient church has arisen a most beautiful structure of stone. Zion M E. Church
was erected in 1845, and rebuilt in 1881, and Grace M.E. Church was built in 1882.
Both of these are built of stone, and are handsome structures. The M.P. Church,
the Baptist Church, and the Catholic Church are also handsome and creditable
buildings, while the Seventh Day Adventists and the Apostolic Holiness Association
have comfortable places of worship. The colored people also have two large and
handsome Churches built of brick, and a colored Baptist Church. Cambridge has
three national Banks and a Trust Co, which does a banking business. They are the
National Bank of Cambridge, The Dorchester National Bank, the Farmers and
Merchants National Bank and the Eastern Shore Trust Company, the last name
operating banks in several nearby towns. We are well supplied with the best of
schools , the Cambridge high School and the Female Seminary, both being new and
handsome brick buildings.
The new Cambridge-Maryland hospital, completed at a cost of about $80,000, is
indeed a grand building, fully equipped with every appliance necessary for the
treatment of disease, and is an institution that any city might well feel proud
of. Cambridge is a beautiful, enterprising and rapidly growing town, noted for
the hospitality and good nature of its citizens, and strangers seeking a place
of recreation or permanent abode could do no better than to select Cambridge.
Sewell M. Moore, postmaster.” (1908-1909 Directory)
