East New Market School vs. Old Brick School Vienna

The photo below was provided by Kari Farnell.  The structure in the background looks like East New Market High School.  The person in the photo has been identified as Eva Ryle by Kari, her mother, and her grandmother.  Eva was born in 1931, so the photo was likely taken between 1945 and 1955.  Eva's mother was in charge of the cafeteria from 1933 on, and Eva attended school at East New Market.

Several East New Market researchers have been comparing building above to other photos to determine if the structure is indeed East New Market High School.  Below I have increased the size of the structure in Kari's photo so that architectural elements can be compared.

Photo from Kari Farnell - Possibly East New Market High School

If the photo above was taken between 1945 and 1955, the rear of the building would feature a two-story flat-roofed brick addition, built in 1938.  Therefore if the photo above is the East New Market School, it was either taken before 1938 or the photo is the front of the school.

The photo below shows the rear of the East New Market School in 1922.  You can immediately see there are differences in the photos.  (1) the two ventilation shafts beside the cupola are not present in the above photo; (2) the above photo shows a center chamber extending outward from the structure; and (3) the count of the windows does not match.

The photo below is from a postcard with a postmark of 1924.  It shows the front of the East New Market School.  You can also see there are differences in the photo below and the photo provided by Kari Farnell (1) the two ventilation shafts beside the cupola are not present in Kari's photo; (2) the center chamber in Kari's photo extends farther outward from the structure; (3) Kari's photo has six windows above the door and the photo below has four; (4) Kari's photo has two windows beside the center chamber and the photo below has three.

I took a second look at the Old Brick School in Vienna after Scott Freeman mentioned it might be a possibility.  The photo below is from the Maryland Historical Trust online inventory forms.  As you can see the structure has a cupola without addition vents or chimneys.  The center chamber is the same size as the one in Kari's photo.  There are two windows beside the center chamber in both photos.

The photo of the Old Brick School in Vienna shows an enlarged entrance vestibule and the window count above the door may not match.  This could be due to a later renovation or  alteration.  It is also possible that one view is the front of the school and the other view is the rear of the school.

Old Brick School - Vienna

Below is the blown up version of Kari's photo.  I now think it shows the Old Brick School in Vienna.  Eva Ryle may have travelled to Vienna to participate in a field hockey game or maybe another sport.
