St. Stephens Episcopal Church

Key date analysis:

The Church purchased three adjacent tracts of land at this site.  The first tract was purchased from Samuel L. Webster in 1892.  It is now the centermost tract and the site of St. Stephens Episcopal Church.  The larger southernmost tract was purchased in 1894.  It was the site of the Female Seminary and is now the site of the St. Stephens Parish Hall.  A smaller tract just north of the Church was purchased from Samuel L. Webster Jr. in 1910.

Who built it:

Reverend Frederick W. Wey is credited with directing the construction of the church building in 1893.  He did a tremendous amount of work on the exterior and interior with his own hands.

2 WLR 125 - 16 April 1910 - Samuel L. Webster & Harriett A. Webster, his wife, to the Convention of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Easton for $125 from the Vestry of the East New Market Parish:  Lot in the town of East New Market lying on the westward side of the street leading to Cabin Creek.  Beginning at the northeast corner of the lot upon which the Church now stands, and from thence running and binding with the line of the said Church lot in a westerly direction, a distance of 125 feet, thence in a northerly direction parallel with said street a distance of 25 feet, thence in an easterly direction and parallel with the first mentioned line, a distance of 125 feet to said street, thence running and binding with the westward side of said street in a southerly direction a distance of 25 feet.

16 CL 712 - 17 September 1892 - Samuel L. Webster & Priscilla Webster, his wife, to the Convention of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Easton for $173 paid by the Vestry of East New Market Parish:  part of a tract in the village of East New Market adjoining the East New Market Female Seminary.  Beginning on the west side of the county road leading to Cabin Creek at the northeast corner of the said Seminary lot and running in a westerly direction by and with the line of the said Seminary lot 250 feet, thence in a northerly course parallel to the line of said road 30 feet easterly and parallel with the first mentioned line 250 feet to said road and thence southerly by and with said road 30 feet to the place of beginning.  Being a part of the farm of said Samuel L. Webster, known as Rose Hill.  ...in trust to permit the said Vestry of East New Market Parish to erect upon said lot a Parish or Church building for such use and purpose as the said Vestry may from time to time prescribe.
