Before the East New Market High School was built, two other schools adjoined this lot.  A grammar school stood on the lot adjoining to the southeast of the High School and is identified as School No. 2 on the 1877 map.  The New Market Academy stood on the lot adjoining to the northwest and is identified as School No. 1 on the 1877 map.  According to an 1928 article in the Daily Banner titled History of Our School Grounds, both the Academy and the Grammar school were torn up and sold for lumber before the East New Market High School was built in 1912.
