Patten-Clauser House

Key date analysis:

This property was originally a 3/4 of an acre from 1796 to 1811.  In 1811 Robert Travers combined this lot with the house and lot that is now 8 Main Street to form a 1 1/2 acre property.  

In 1937, the 1 1/2 acre property was again divided into two lots which now comprise 6 Main Street and 8 Main Street.   The division line between these two lots was not same division line as in 1811.  The lot is 6 Main Street is a little smaller than it was prior to 1811.

Who built it:

John E. Patten & Amelia Patten of the Veau de L'Eau Corporation built this house around 1940.

Bernice Clausser 48 years.

Likely local residents will remember the year this house was built.  The current tax records give a ballpark estimate of 1950.  Perhaps older tax records or other records would reveal an exact construction year.

Historic Records:

587 MLB 554 - 15 July 2004 - Bernice B. Clausser as surviving tenant of Reuben A. Clausser to Earnest B. Abbott Jr. & Dolores Abbott, his wife, for $110,000:  lot in East New Market binding upon the westerly side of Main Street in 66 RSM 16.  Beginning at a point on the westerly side of Main Street S26/25W 113.5f to the land now or formerly known as the "Andrews Property" or the "Pennypacker Property", thence running N64/W 187f to a post, thence running N10/33E 199.5f to the westerly end of the aforementioned fence, thence running and binding on the southerly side of the fence so that is on the land now or formerly owned by Jay Overton, S64/20E 210f to the place of beginning.  Being the same property conveyed unto Reuben A. Clausser & Bernice B. Clausser, his wife, by deed from John E. Patten & Amelia Patten, dated 13 August 1956 in 100 RSM 575.  The said Reuben Clausser having departed this life whereupon title became vested in Bernice B. Clausser, the survivor.

100 RSM 575 - 13 August 1956 - John E. Patten & Amelia Patten, his wife, to Reuben A. Clausser & Bernice B. Clausser, his wife, for $5:  Lot in East New Market being the same land conveyed to the Vue de L'Eau Corporation on 22 April 1948 in 66 RSM 16.

36 JFD 89 - 12 June 1937 - Jay & Selena Overton to the Vue de Leau Corporation for $5:  lot on the Westward side of Main Street in the town of East New Market.  Beginning at a point on the westward edge of the sidewalk on the westward side of said Main Street at the eastern edge of a new fence that has just been erected by the said Jay Overton, which fence is the division fence between the lands retained, reserved and not conveyed by the said grantors.  From the beginning running with and binding upon the westward side of the said street S26/25W 113.5f, to the property commonly known as the "Andrews Property", which is the beginning point of the description of the whole lot of the said grantors, and from thence running and binding upon the said Andrews property N64/30W 187f to a post, and from thence N10/33E 119.5f, to the westward end of the aforesaid new fence and from thence running and binding on the southward side of said fence, so that the said fence is on the land of the grantors, S64/30E 210f to the place of beginning.  It being the same land that was conveyed by a deed to the said Jay Overton and Selina E. Overton, his wife, from Samuel Clark Smith and other on 18 July 1936 in 34 JFD 187.  John E. Patten signs for the Vue de Leau Corporation.
