5 Railroad Avenue

Pegelows

(Frederick Pegelow Shoemaker, The Drain Building)

Key date analysis:

A structure did not exist at this location on the 1877 map.  By 1914 there was a building that housed both a shoe store and a grocery store.  The building survived the 1914 fire, but was "partially damaged".  A 1914 newspaper article states the value of the building was $500.  The building was possibly erected between 1879 and 1883 as Emma Dean bought the property for $200 and sold it for $500 during that period.  The building was likely torn down in the early 1950s.  The property is now a paved lot behind the Realty Building.

Who built it:

A preliminary conclusion would be that Emma Dean & husband built a small store shortly after purchasing the lot in 1879.

Longest Residents:

The Drain / Creighton family owned the property for 68 years.

More Research:

Need more insight as to what buildings appear in the Railroad Avenue photos.  Did Pegelow operate his shoe shop from another location that he owned prior to 1914?  Why isn't Hattie Creighton listed in the 1896 tax record.
