(Also known as the M.S. Fletcher Store, E. Holland & Co., Mary K. Willey Store, and the Pure Oil Service Station)
Key date analysis:
In 1862, Mary Bramble sold to M.S. Fletcher the lot "where the M.S. Fletcher store now stands" at the southwest corner of the main intersection in East New Market. The M.S. Fletcher store at the corner of Main Street and Academy Street was depicted on the 1877 map and the 1922 map. Testimony about an 1846 Will mentions a John Bramble's store in New Market. He was a son of Mary Bramble.
The second store father down Academy Street on this lot was shown on the 1922 map, but was not shown on the 1877 map or described in earlier deeds. A 1919 deed for this property mentions the M.S. Fletcher Store, but does not mention a store at this property. The deed leads me to believe this part of the property was vacant in 1919.
Who built it:
The M.S. Fletcher Store was likely built before 1846 by Jeremiah Bramble and family. It was probably built after Mary King Bramble married Jeremiah Bramble in 1817.
The other store was likely built between 1919 and 1922 by Thomas W.H. Collins. He was known to have been a carpenter.
Longest Residents:
Perhaps the Bramble's, Fletcher's, and the Allen's operated the corner store for up to 25 years each. Thomas Collins and William Mills possibly ran a store on Academy Street for up to 20 years each.

1914 - Big Conflagration at East New Market -
Only the most heroic efforts by the citizens prevented the store of E.
Holland & Co. from being destroyed, as the front of the building, which
is directly across the street from the Hotel Chesadel, was on fire
several times, and is quite badly charred. Had it not been for Mr. L.
Cad Howard, who stood upon the porch and kept a small stream of water
from a force pump going on it, the store would have undoubtedly have
been burned, and in doing so, Mr. Howard had the whole of one side of
his face badly burned.

Wednesday night, again, we have another silver wedding. This time the
scene changes a little. Some 28 years ago there lived in this town a
lady who was admired by all observers, and many were they who sought,
but won not the belle of E. New Market, until a young merchant, who had
established himself in business, and who by his pluck and thorough
business push, which has characterized his after life - entered the race
and won the prize. We meet them as we never met them before. Here he
stands as one of the old land marks, and here is he by his side, the
support now as then. They entered life's race hand in hand. Here are
their only offspring Nettie and Major - the others are watching and
waiting from beyond the river, and these two, who are celebrating their
25th anniversary, are making rapid strides to join them. We congratulate
them and with them many more years. The house is full, the lunch table
is all that the appetite may wish for, and the sweetmeats and cream are
superb. The gifts are not profuse but elegant. The clock strikes two,
and we are taking our leave with many blessings upon Capt. M.S. Fletcher
and Willie K. Bramble.
