5 Linkwood Road

Willis-Hubbard House

Key date analysis:

The 1877 map shows two structures on the property of Charles T. Willis, but does not show a structure at this location.  The 1922 map shows the two structures from the 1877 map and a third structure at this location.  All three structures are identified as dwellings on the 1922 map.  A 1909 entry for the tax record of Charles H. Willis notes a new dwelling on the lot near the M.E. Church.  This house was a 2-story house.  Linda Hubbard tells a story that in the early 1960s when she was engaged to her late husband Oliver W. Hubbard, he told her this 2-story house would be their home.  At the time the house was in very bad shape.  The house did not have windows or paint.  She was young and shocked at the prospect.  The first thing Oliver did after acquiring the house from his father in the 1960s was to remove the 2nd story.  Part of the current 1-story house is the first story of the original house.  Oliver W. Hubbard later extended the house with a 1-story addition.

Who built it:

Charles H. Willis built the original 2-story structure in 1909.  Oliver W. Hubbard converted the house to 1-story and added another addition in the 1960s.

Longest Residents:

The Willis family owned the land for 72 years and the house for 37 years.  The Hubbard family have owned the house for 61 years.

More Research:

The old story about the original part of the house being moved from across the street is a vague recollection.  This story needs to be confirmed through other sources and records of the time period if possible.
