From 1900 to 1901, Dorchester County had seven weekly newspapers. Six were based in Cambridge and one in Hurlock. The newspapers were Democrat & News, Cambridge Chronicle, Dorchester Era, The Item, Dorchester Standard, Daily Banner, and the Hurlock Advance. By 1910 with so many papers competing for readers, only three newspapers survived. They were the Democrat and News, the Daily Banner, and the Hurlock Advance.
By 1909 a newspaper called the East New Market Advertiser was in existence. Nothing more is know about this newspaper. In 1923, the Hurlock Advance changed its name to the Upper Dorchester News. Newspapers in nearby areas sometimes mentioned East New Market highlights.
The Denton Journal was published in Denton, Caroline County, Maryland from 1847 to 1965. The focus of the newspaper was the towns of Caroline county, but sometimes these towns would interact with East New Market and other times something significant happened in East New Market that warranted a mention in a neighboring counties newspaper.
I began to transcribe all mentions of East New Market during this period, but found it too daunting a task. Many social items included when someone visited the town, when someone from town visited elsewhere, who was going to preach on Sunday, and a few other less exciting happenings. I transcribed theses items in their entirety when available for 1923 and 1924. However, for other years I limited my transcriptions to slightly bigger events and news.
